About ZSL
The Zoological Society of London manages two of Britain's most important zoos and are also actively engaged in research and other work to ensure "a world where wildlife thrives." The Society was founded in 1826; Charles Darwin was an early member who made the society a powerhouse for scientific studies such as natural selection. The London Zoo is home to an array of famous animals including Jumbo the Elephant, Gus the Gorilla and Winnie, a black bear who inspired the Winnie-the-Pooh books. The zoo was also founded in 1849 and is no longer with the Society but instead remains open to visitors.
